CGM SCHUYLAB Laboratory Information System

Lab management software with integrated billing for US and international markets

CGM SCHUYLAB Laboratory Information System is a full-featured LIS that is scalable to operate cleanly in a single-station physician office lab or at a multi-site reference laboratory with no limit on the number of specimens processed daily.

CGM SCHUYLAB interfaces instruments, monitors QC, compiles worksheets and daily logs, and collates and prints patient results. Billing, internet, auto-verification, and other advanced features are available.

Lab software with integrated billing

CGM SCHUYLAB offers an optional, but fully integrated billing system for reference labs, veterinary labs, or any lab with a need to perform its own, in-house billing.

Created by the same development team behind the rest of the LIS, the billing application is a rich and powerful option that allows a laboratory to bill directly for the procedures it performs, sending transactions to government insurance, private insurance, and billing consolidators.

CGM SCHUYLAB also receives remittance from insurers and consolidators.

Translated interface for international markets

CGM SCHUYLAB is the ideal laboratory information system for international markets. CGM SCHUYLAB is offered in Spanish, French, German, Chinese, and many more. This stand-out feature helps CompuGroup Medical serve laboratories in Africa, South America, across the United States, and around the world.

Featured Options for CGM SCHUYLAB

Billing

If your lab performs its billing in-house, CGM SCHUYLAB offers a fully integrated billing option that eliminates errors, omissions, and the manual double-entry of testing results and patient data. The automated billing feature can electronically upload claims to a clearinghouse for the fastest way to get paid.

Language Display

Available in languages from Spanish to Chinese, CGM SCHUYLAB can even support multiple languages within a single facility, so a bilingual laboratory could have techs working in English and Spanish and relying on the same database to track tests and results.

Autoverification

Regulatory statutes now allow results to be verified by an LIS. CGM SCHUYLAB provides rule-based options that allow the bulk of your work to be automatically accepted as soon as it performed. Your technologists will then only need to look at exceptions/abnormal results.

Cytology

Offer a demographics-style report with the ability for entering the interpretative ranges based on the Bethesda system for reporting cervical cytology. Another report provides statistics for those aspects of Pap smear testing which need to be monitored for legal and technical purposes.

Microbiology

Define the organisms that may be entered for any bacteriological sample. With the Microbiology option, sensitivities are custom-tailored to each organism. Fully annotated results are entered for the culture, the organism, and the antibiotics.

Medical Necessity

Know which tests insurance companies and government agencies will pay for and which ones they won’t. Relying on the CodeMap database, CGM SCHUYLAB will alert you when tests and diagnoses are mismatched, and you can check to see if you have entered the ICD-10 code correctly.

How CGM SCHUYLAB fits your physician office lab

For the small physician office lab that is just getting started, perhaps only with a single analyzer, CGM SCHUYLAB is an excellent laboratory information system. Run the clinical tests supported in your laboratory, and expand the capabilities of your LIS as your practice grows.

Our providers enjoy customizable reports, quality control, managerial functions, and the ability to interface to their electronic health record (EHR) or practice management (PM) software.

Real-Time Processing

Many physicians’ offices exist because the doctor needs immediate test results. Monitoring a patient’s blood levels before administering therapeutic drugs, checking blood glucose and potassium level or a tumor marker, for instance, needs to be done before the patient is seen by the provider.

Patient compliance is better and patient outcome is improved when the physician has the results and can initiate or change treatment while the patient is still in the office. CGM SCHUYLAB can provide dynamic instrument interfaces, customizable patient reports, and easy-to-use functionality to improve the speed and quality of your patient care.

Instrument Interfaces

CGM SCHUYLAB can interface with your analyzers, providing seamless bidirectional communication to automate ordering and results transmission, efficient quality control analysis and monitoring, automatic delta checks against prior test results, and a permanent record of test results which can be retrieved in an instant.

Practice Management or EHR Interface

Your practice management system sends orders to the lab without need for a paper requisition. CGM SCHUYLAB delivers results back to the practice management system as soon as they are released. The doctor can access results instantly without needing to have printed reports delivered.

Barcodes

Modern laboratory practices rely on barcoded sample tubes to ensure positive, automated identification of samples and efficient sample handling and workflow. CGM SCHUYLAB can create and utilize barcodes to streamline your lab’s workflow and reduce testing turnaround times.

Test Referral

Everyone needs to send some tests out to a reference lab. This option does that electronically. As soon as you package up a set of samples to go out to a reference lab, CGM SCHUYLAB creates an electronic manifest to send to that lab.

Quality Control (QC)

Monitoring and maintaining quality control is a part of the work you do every day in the lab. CGM SCHUYLAB stores QC values for your analyzers, automatically calculates and analyzes QC data according to the Westgard Rules you select, and allows annotation of results when needed.

Manager Reports

Managerial reports are some of the most important and useful assets in CGM SCHUYLAB. These reports aid in troubleshooting problems, documenting test values and test numbers, and fulfilling CLIA documentation requirements.  They are easily accessible and can be customized to fit your lab’s needs.

With Outstanding Tests, Test Tally, Test Values, Critical Values, Demographics, or a dynamic Quality Control report, among others, CGM SCHUYLAB will produce the information that is needed to run a lab as efficiently as possible.

Toxicology/Medication (Rx)

Many POLs perform toxicology testing. The CGM SCHUYLAB Medication option correlates a patient’s test results with their prescribed medication and creates an easy-to-read interpretation report. Doctors can immediately see whether or not a patient’s test results are consistent with their prescription and track the patient’s current and previous prescriptions to ensure compliance.

How CGM SCHUYLAB fits your hospital lab

One of the defining characteristics of a hospital is that it deals with patients who are acutely ill. A hospital laboratory must be dynamic and immediately responsive to a new order or a scheduled draw. Testing must be done quickly and the results delivered immediately in order to ensure desired patient outcomes.

CGM SCHUYLAB provides the versatile tools and capabilities needed to maintain an efficient workflow; properly manage your data; and produce quality, reliable results to your healthcare providers instantly.

HIS Interface

The hospital system sends its orders to the lab without need for a paper slip and CGM SCHUYLAB delivers results to the HIS as soon as they are released. The HIS immediately displays those results on the wards and in the appropriate departments so that medical personnel can see them where they are working.

Barcodes

The days are past when a typical laboratory can do without a barcode module.  Almost all of our customers select this feature as a matter of course.

Standing Orders

Patients in a hospital are frequently monitored by repeated analysis (H&H, PTT, Ca). The doctor may order these tests to be done every four hours for the next two days, for example. CGM SCHUYLAB can keep track of that standing order and generate a new accession when the correct time comes due.

Draw Monitor

Put this screen on the wall in your phlebotomy department, and your phlebs will instantly see a new order when it is placed. A standing order that has come due will also automatically appear on this screen.

Turnaround Time Monitor

Put this screen on the wall in your main lab room, and your techs will be able to find—and resolve—potential snags before trouble actually materializes.  Samples in your laboratory will move from ‘green’ status when their testing is on time, to ‘yellow’ status to indicate that there is some sort of a delay. A tech or supervisor can address any problems before the results are actually overdue and get those results out within your lab’s stated turnaround time (TAT).

Autoverification

Free your medical technologists from the burden of dealing with numerous, routine, normal results. Current expectations (and regulations) are that 80% of your results will be autoverified by your LIS.

CGM SCHUYLAB provides rule-based options that allow the bulk of your work to be accepted automatically as soon as it performed. Your technologists will only need to look at exceptions/abnormal results. Autoverification will lower your turnaround time.

Review Orders, QA & Results

These options, designed for large-throughput labs, allow a lab to screen for errors in ordering and accessioning, and for result coherence before the results are released. You will have the option of having autoverified results be screened before being released—or they may bypass review altogether. CGM SCHUYLAB has a sophisticated rules engine that lets you control what will happen.

Epidemiology

All hospitals have to report on the organisms they culture and on the reportable diseases they detect.

CGM SCHUYLAB has a special report to pull this data out of the rest of the results and send just it to your hospital’s epidemiology department.

Microbiology

Cultures and gram stains are part of the typical work of a hospital laboratory. CGM SCHUYLAB has a sophisticated microbiology option that allows a single culture to be broken into separate isolates, with each isolate tracked individually.  Working notes are stored in CGM SCHUYLAB but not published on the report.

Cytology

Most laboratories in medium to large hospitals have a cytology department. The cytology option manages these cases, including required repeats and confirmations.

Pricing

A hospital lab does not need a full billing option, but you may need to send appropriately bundled and priced tests to the hospital’s billing system. If this is the case for your lab, our Pricing option will do the trick.

Tracking Name Changes

One situation unique to hospitals is the need to deal with emergency department admissions of unknown identity. CGM SCHUYLAB is programmed to be able to deal with the change from “Jane Doe” in the ED to knowing the patient’s actual ID when they are admitted to ICU. The work done on the patient is retained, and secondary patient ID numbers may be retained, as well. When the patient transitions to a known identity, none of the data is lost or orphaned.

How CGM SCHUYLAB fits your reference lab

Our experience in working with reference laboratories over the last 25 years has allowed us to develop the tools you need, whether you are running 200 samples a day or 2000 or more. CompuGroup Medical can help you handle the challenges of starting a brand new reference laboratory or, in an existing laboratory, ease the conversion from an obsolete LIS to CGM SCHUYLAB.

Since reference labs receive large batches of work at a single time, we have special options designed to handle both the rapid accessioning that keeps your turnaround times low and the review process that makes sure your results are accurate before they are released.

Start-Up Laboratories

Many of our customers are start-up reference laboratories. At the beginning of this process, you are spending money and looking forward to the day when it starts coming back in. Since CGM SCHUYLAB is modular, you can start with a few stations,  interface your main analyzers, get through your inspections, and get right to work. As your workload grows, you can add the features you come to require. CGM SCHUYLAB has the depth you will need to succeed in the years ahead.

CGM SCHUYNET Web Portal

Offer secure online access for orders and results

Secure, online access is the most contemporary method of providing result delivery. It does not matter where your clinician is: in his office or at home or at a conference. With CGM SCHUYNET Laboratory Outreach Solution, providers can still log on and see patient results and look up prior information. With the Ordering option, CGM SCHUYNET allows doctors to place orders for tests online, and the Medical Necessity option can be activated to advise on the payability of tests as they are ordered.

Results delivery

There is little that you can do to speed the transit of coolers full of specimens across town in rush hour, but once the samples arrive in the lab and analysis is complete, modern results dispersal allows healthcare providers to quickly and easily view results online.

CGM SCHUYNET is HIPAA compliant—it meets HIPAA security requirements for patient data. The laboratory controls the security setup for each of its customers, determining the visibility of results to each physician in a practice. CGM SCHUYNET allows providers to view custom graphs and .pdf reports that identical to the results they would have received on paper from the laboratory. A patient's result history and diagnoses are available with just a couple of button clicks.

Rise to meet patient expectations, and send text or email alerts whenever new results are ready for review.

Web-based orders

With CGM SCHUYNET, healthcare providers can quickly and conveniently order diagnostic procedures online. (This is an optional feature of CGM SCHUYNET and is configured individually for each of your clients.) Customer-based order entry improves the accuracy of the orders. When coupled with Medical Necessity, CGM SCHUYNET facilitates the selection of adequate diagnoses for the laboratory tests just ordered. ABN’s are also printed as needed.

When Barcoding is also part of the system, labels are printed at the client’s practice to securely identify the patients’ samples at point of collection. With CGM SCHUYNET online ordering, laboratory accessioning turns into a check-in process, where the samples and tests ordered are validated, alterations are made as necessary (a tube broke on the way in), and the sample is activated in CGM SCHUYLAB. Barcode scanners streamline this process this into just a couple of clicks.

Customize web presence

CGM SCHUYNET can integrate with your existing webpage or stand on its own. Either way, it advertises your laboratory. Your physicians go to a webpage with your name and logo on it to retrieve their results—and they can do this from anywhere they have web access. This provides a personalized utility that associates the increase in accessibility of results with the name of your laboratory. As a historical record of the patients accumulates on your CGM SCHUYLAB system, the doctors will have access to more and more lab information on their patients. This is data that they will not want to lose by changing to another lab. In the meantime, your lab experiences a reduction in calls for reports and patient information.

Results Delivery

Many providers expect a reference lab to offer online access for orders and results, and often they will require a patient portal for patients to view results, as well.

CGM SCHUYNET allows your clients secure, 24/7, online access to results that are hosted by your laboratory. If you wish, you can help speed up the accessioning process and allow providers to place orders through the portal, too.

Batch Sample Processing

For manual entry, the batch requisition feature lets the entire accessioning process take place on a single screen, and many accessioners can work in parallel to accession simultaneously.

You will have the option of having autoverified results be screened before being released—or they may bypass review altogether. CGM SCHUYLAB has a sophisticated rules engine that lets you control what will happen.

System Interfacing

Retain and attract major clients by interfacing directly to their EMR.

Your clients will be able to order lab tests on their own EMR/HIS or Practice Management system, and they will see the results on that same system when they are completed.

A secure, reliable system interface can make it so convenient for your customers that they will never want to change to a different reference laboratory.

Inventory

Streamline and automate your ordering and inventory with help from CGM SCHUYLAB. Set reminders, lead times, and more, and use a barcode scanner to keep your inventory levels up to date as you use consumables, reagents, and more.

Billing

The financial success of a reference laboratory depends on efficiency, outreach, and fast and accurate billing. CGM SCHUYLAB is one of the few laboratory information systems that has a fully integrated billing system.

CGM SCHUYLAB offers a totally integrated billing solution. Send claims that originate from the work you just completed in the lab directly to CMS, insurance companies, clearing houses, doctors, or patients. You do not need to double enter any data into another system. This ensures you avoid introducing errors.

If your ordering process is more customized for clients, CGM SCHUYLAB can automatically break apart those orders and intelligently re-bundle the tests into CMS-permitted procedures before billing for them.

Below are a list of the optional billing modules. A new reference lab might start with basic billing, sending out paper bills.  But as the lab grows, e-billing and e-remittance become more of a necessity.

  • ANSI 837 Electronic Billing to CMS/Insurance
  • ANSI 835 Remittance
  • Client Invoicing
  • Patient Billing
  • CMS-1500
  • Medical Necessity Checking
  • Unlimited Fee Schedules

Not only can insurances be billed, but clients and patients can have bills sent directly to them, customized to their needs. Multiple fee schedules can be set up for different insurances, and the all-important medical necessity option ensures the correct diagnosis code goes with each test to reduce rejections by both private insurances and Medicare/Medicaid.

Traditional Network vs. Client Host

Running a multi-site facility? The Client Host setup improves performance, saves on VPN costs, and creates a more secure and stable environment.

A traditional CGM SCHUYLAB installation runs as an application on each workstation, and the workstations connect to a database running on the server. While this is technically a client/server application, none of the application code runs on the server, and workstations must be on the same Windows network as the server, either within the same facility or using a costly VPN connection.

With the Client Host setup, the CGM SCHUYLAB host program runs as a service on the server along with the database. The complex data management is processed on the server, improving overall performance. When a software update is installed on the server, all workstations reflect this improvement automatically at login, saving lots of time for large labs with many workstations.

Workstations connect directly to the host server using the IP address, which also eliminates the need for costly and complicated VPN connections to remote facilities.
